Audition post (400 words):
They all had nightmares sometimes. Axel was pretty certain the only exceptions had been Vexen, who believed dreams were utterly and completely illogical and served no scientific purpose whatsoever, and Saïx, who refused to acknowledge that he had the capability to dream because clearly that indicated emotion. It had actually been Xigbar who had pointed out that dreams were technically believed to be random firings of nerve synapses in the brain and had nothing to do with emotion or the heart. Saïx had looked like he was toying with the idea of punching the older man, but had apparently decided in the end that would be a bad decision. No one seemed sure whether or not Xemnas was plagued by the terrible dreams that afflicted the others, since he didn't have a 'room' the way the rest of them did. The long, thin, white-and-silver hallway that spiraled off one of the lower towers in the castle only had twelve doors, after all, and Xigbar's stood at the mouth of the hallway where logically door #1 should have been.
Rather in the same manner of Proof of Existence, the Hall Where Nothing Sleeps consisted of a dozen narrow, labeled doorways, each bearing a number and a small symbol that illustrated the member-in-question's weapon or element. Certainly they each had their own space to ponder and contemplate the meaning of existence or whatever it was Saïx was always doing in the Addled Impasse, but surely no one slept there. Luxord had joked once that if he'd tried to nap in Havoc's Divide, he'd roll right off the steeply slanted edge! But the superior had no sleeping quarters in that hall, and the elders believed he spent his evenings in the mysterious Room of Sleep, where none of them could follow, and so if Xemnas's nights were as haunted as those of his Organization, they supposed they would never know.
For Axel, sleep simply did not come easy. He would find himself laying awake in the darkest hours, and find sleep near impossible to fully reach. Though, when sleep did overtake him, it would naturally be short lived and he would find himself awake with such a stir either on his own accord, or the accord of others. In fact, sleep hadn’t come so naturally to Axel since he left.
Though, it still raised an almost interesting question for the Flurry of Dancing Flames. Could Nobodies really dream? It seemed almost absurd of him to think such thoughts in the early hours of the morning - or the late hours of the evening - but it was one question that he simply could not put to rest this particular evening. It had been something the other Organization members started discussing earlier that day during breakfast. It had also been a conversation in which Axel did not and could not partake in…For the only way to join in on such a trivial conversation would have been to actually have been able to dream. And dreams just did not come naturally for Axel. He could not easily remember a time in which he had ever had any sort of dream. Only, if he were to have announced this in the presences of the others, they would have turned to him for the briefest of moments and just laugh. It was a conversation in which he had pictures countless times before, and one he just did not want to live.
Still, the question just couldn’t have been put to rest for Axel that very evening. It was one he’d been mauling over for hours now, and unsuccessful could he come to any sort of conclusion on such a meaningless matter. It was so meaningless in fact, he had decided earlier on, that there was no reason worrying about it. Not being able to dream had not effected him early on, and so he found no reason as to why it should effect him now. Though that conclusion had been drawn hours ago, and still he was searching for the right answers.
The softest of sighs escaped his lips, and he found his emerald green eyes glare angrily up at the ceiling before him. It would not have been a question he would spend his night thinking about, if it hadn’t have been for the fact that he left. The he in which our Flurry of Dancing Flames had been referring to this evening had been Number 13. Roxas. He’d been one of Axel’s best friends, someone that actually understood him…Unlike the other members. Roxas was better then the others, until he decided to leave…
And even as the name was thought, just bubbling under his skin, Axel simply could not help but wonder. Did Roxas dream too? And if he did in fact dream, what did he dream about? Perhaps it had only been himself who could dream of anything at all in slumber. Perhaps it was just some curse he would need to live with no matter what. Maybe he was destined to be forever blessed with the inability to dream. After all, most humans could easily complain of nightmares, so if in fact Axel could not by any stretch of the means dream, then maybe he wouldn’t be plagued by these so called nightmares that the humans claimed existed.
Even if such a thing were n fact true, what if he was the only one missing out? He’d already heard the discussions that morning at breakfast, a discussion in which he could not openly announce his views of the matter. If he were the only one in Castle Oblivion that simply could not dream, then what was he missing out on?
It was a thought that both angered him and troubled him to a high extent. Something on any other basis wouldn’t have bothered him like so, something he wanted to know for sure. But above all else, he wanted to know for sure. Did Roxas dream? Were they dreams of Axel? And how he had betrayed the Organization and was now regretting the decision to do so? No matter what, his thoughts all turned back to Roxas, as though a part of him simply could not come to terms with the fact that he had left…This time for good.
Perhaps if he could come to terms with the fact that the Roxas he knew was long gone, then perhaps he could get a night of uninterrupted sleep. A night in which he was not in consistent thought about anything at all. If only Axel could get that lucky for just one night…
Still, as his frustration ebbed to a steady anger, an anger in which he could come to terms with the previous day, the question simply remained. Above everything else, it was one thing Axel was curious about, if for no other reason then the fact that he wanted to know what it was like.
