Audition post (400 words):
In a dark, cold laboratory deep within the basement of Castle Oblivion, something had begun to stir. A machine left idle for months and months, sitting there doing it's silent work, was suddenly beeping in confirmation. Whatever task it had been assigned to so long ago it had finally completed. The large grey container bore a single sealed door, never opened . As the adjacent control pad's tiny light switched from red to green the beeping ceased and the sealed exit of the chamber began to creak open, breaking the still air with a screeching sound that warranted a few drops of oil into whatever mechanics were moving the contraption. A few wisps of black ether seemed to flow out of the initial crack, spreading out across the room before fading into nothingness. How appropriate, for that was exactly what they were made of.
"Axel! How dare you attack your superior!?"
A voice full of feigned-for-effect malice and weighed down by a distinct whining quality came bounding out of the opening chamber before the vocal chords that produced it. The scrawny, scowling form of Vexen soon followed, clad in his black Organization coat and with his long dull blond hair hanging down from his head. The Nobody looked slightly off-balance despite his facial features being locked in a state of certainty as a black-gloved hand steadied Even's slightly deformed body by hanging on to the side of the door as it stepped out into its lab.
Yes... not the normal research area but his secret lab, hidden in Castle Oblivion where he was sure none of the others would find or disturb it. It seemed that he was right, as Vexen fully expected himself to be, considering that nothing had changed since he last saw it. Truly he was a genius. Even Vexen couldn't have been sure if his recovery chamber would work or not, and his last moments had been filled with expressions of fear and pleading due to this doubt. How foolish he was to even consider it a possible failure! After his demise by Axel's flames the machine had automatically begun the process of collecting the scattered fragments of the nothingness that made up his body and mind, drawing them into the chamber for reconstruction. With so many pieces and such a complex life form to rebuild it was unknown how much time would be required for a Nobody like Vexen who retained his original shape. That was, in fact, the matter of the academic one's immediate concern.
'How long?' the scientist wondered in an annoyed tone in his head, doing everything he could both internally and externally to prolong the illusion of negative emotions. He needed to vent his intellectual frustration at the massive backfire and betrayal handed to him by Sora and those traitorous lower-ranking members. In the meantime he moved over to the timepiece sitting in the dimly-lit room and bared his teeth in an act of grinding.
Over a year! He had been gone for a long time. Given how stubbornly Sora was trying to hold on to his false memories instead of listening to his heart the last Vexen saw of the boy, he could very well be Marluxia's puppet at this very moment. Unfortunately he would need to recover some more information and quickly. Though his strength had not fully returned Vexen's ability to call up a gateway to the corridors of darkness was still completely intact. In moments he had vanished from this world, seeking out another rejected by the realms of light and darkness.
In a swirl of black and shadows the body of Even, former apprentice of Ansem the Wise, returned to the secret research lab hidden inside Castle Oblivion. Gone.... everything in the World That Never Was was gone. No sign of the other members of Organization XIII, and even the lesser Nobodies still creeping around paid no attention to his authority over them! Vexen had actually been reduced to the pathetic act of using force to get information from the Dusks, a humiliation he would not be forgiving the others for any time soon for their part in losing their places as leaders of the Nobodies. The information he got, at least, had proved most revealing and most interesting.
Vexen was pacing now, his right hand raised to his chin in thought. Sora and Riku had wiped out all the Nobodies in Castle Oblivion except for that conniving vermin Axel. Afterwards they had instigated the downfall of the entire Organization, including the mighty Superior himself. Vexen didn't know if the others had survived as he had, though he certainly didn't expect any of them all to be smart enough to prepare for every contingency so luck would no doubt have to be on their side if they were still around. No, right now something else was on Vexen's brilliant mind. Something that was enticing him to smile despite the lack of need.
He was right all along!
That boy, Riku. He was the truly special one. The one who's heart held the most knowledge to be gained. After leaving this place and defeating his own darkness, a darkness greater than himself, he suppressed it with the power of his heart. He even used it, becoming darkness itself and using it's power to battle the Organization on equal grounds. Perhaps most remarkable of all, in the depths of darkness his heart still held onto the light and was awarded with a Keyblade! Vexen's deductions had been correct from the very beginning and it pleased the Nobody as much as it was possible to do so for such a being to have that certainty reinforced, padding his self-generated ego.
'But why was the replica such a failure...' the scientist wondered curiously as he approached one of the many lab tables in the hidden room, this one with a large computer monitor on it that sprang to life and began displaying data after a few keystrokes. Yes, the information was all still here. The data he'd collected from Riku during the brief battle with the boy and the design of the artificial body and heart modeled after the original. According to all the numbers it should have been perfect, making up for Riku's weaknesses and maximizing his strengths. Yet it's potential was lost...
“Of course!” Vexen exclaimed happily in a squeal that was disfigured by the fact that the voice and tone were both male. “It wasn't my design at all! It was those traitors!”
Yes, he remembered everything now. How it all went wrong. The replica had faced the real Riku in battle and walked away, but after that Namine had re-written it's memories to believe it was the real thing. And who's idea was that? Larxene's! That deplorable Nymph had convinced him it was for the sake of the experiment, then proclaimed the replica a complete failure and mocked him after it went rogue because of the tampering. He had been tricked and threatened in the borrowed name of Xemnas by the lot of them! But now, he realized as his facial features twisted up from a cursing expression to one of scientific intrigue, he could do things right. Start all over again and create a Riku Replica the way it was meant to be. He didn't need the data of the current Riku. All of his potential was still here in the old files of his younger self. The potential to wield the darkness to it's greatest capacity... and perhaps, even beyond Vexen's dreams, the power to attain a Keyblade slept deep within it!
How could he think about the other members of the fallen Organization or even the matter of revenge when such possibilities lay had hand, the very hands that now moved across keyboards all over the lab setting up formulas and design specs all over again while programming the proper commands into his machines. Just imagine, building an artificial heart capable of winning a Keyblade of it's own! If he could achieve that then his intellectual superiority would be without question, even by Xemnas! The ability to create an artificial heart that wields a Keyblade... how far away would be the ability to create a real heart? A heart of his very own, formed by his very own genius mind! Not to mention the chance to study the Keyblade itself, as he had never been able to do for the ones held by that rebellious Roxas.
Lost in his ideals of grandeur and the potential scientific discoveries, Vexen filled his long-abandoned laboratory with life, getting programs and experiments running in every area, not just on the Riku project but on other old plans left in stasis during his absence as well. The world itself would be changed by the discoveries this Nobody would make about the heart thanks to that silver-haired boy and the Keyblade. Of that he had no doubt, even where doubt was warranted.
