“Whatcha gonna do, oh forever damsel in distress?”
Kairi paused her battle stance, blinking her big crystalline blue eyes.
..What?
Was she really classified as a damsel in distress? Well, that was quite unsettling. The red-head wrinkled her nose slightly, a pout forming on her lips a bit as she shifted the keyblade in her hands. Sure, she’d lost her heart before, and then Sora sacrificed himself to get it back for her..but did that make her a damsel in distress? She had hugged him and returned his heart, so essentially she “counter saved him”. She was grateful to him, but she liked to think that she could have somehow saved herself. She was just young back then. Now that she was older…well..she had gotten kidnapped and thrown into an Organization XIII prison as Sora bait, but she hadn’t recovered from her memory repair yet…
Who was she kidding? She had been a damsel in distress. Even when Xehanort plucked her up from Hollow Bastion as a child and dropped her on Destiny Islands, she’d been the same damsel in distress. But at least she’d made great friends…
But…not anymore!
So what if she couldn’t wield the keyblade with only one hand yet? It wasn’t like she’d had a lot of practice. Even Sora had held it with both hands in the beginning, and look how strong he was now. She remembered Sora and Riku always sparring, and Riku usually beat little Sora. It was so funny thinking of it now, Sora being strong enough to actually defeat Riku. To defeat Ansem and Organization XIII… to save worlds. Goofy little Sora. Now he was a hero. The hero who kept saving her… Kairi smiled slightly as she started to muse for only a second.
MEH!
Her expression grew serious and determined. She would not need Sora to come save her this time. She’d make sure to do it on her own. She was tired of being the damsel in distress. Some training to help her fight more effectively would be nice, but she didn’t have time for that now. She was staring her opponent in the face. It was a one on one battle. No time to worry if she could do this or not. She had to assume she could, and that’s why the small girl took off at a dead run, jumping while she raised the keyblade over her head for a downward slash. Fighting with it felt natural, but that was expected. Chosen keyblade holders would logically feel at home waving it around, right?
The notorious gleam of pre-empted victory appeared in her eyes as she brought the weapon down on this cynical nobody, a smirk appearing on her lips. She had him!
Or so she thought.
Next she knew she was landing off balance without hitting a thing, stumbling forward with a bewildered look. She was sure she’d had him. He’d looked surprised! Yet he evaded, and had also prepared a counter attack. A large, blunt weapon thwacked her on the back, sending her clamoring to the floor and her keyblade out of her grasp. She made no move to grasp for it for she knew she could re-summon it to her hands with ease. At least she could count on that.
She rose to her feet and blew her hair from her face with a short huff, lowering her brows in even more determination. Again she attacked, and the pattern of attack-and-miss or attack-and-deflect went on for a long while. She was thrilled she was able to hold the villain off from kidnapping her, but she was also frustrated she couldn’t get rid of him! And the worst part was she was starting to get tired.
“I am impressed, I must say. You are making this most difficult..and annoying…”
Kairi, taking a small victory in the enemy’s words, gasped in horror and started to back up, then turned tail and ran. The nobody was going into pumped-up killer mode, meaning she could most likely not evade or parry. She needed time to think. She had to strategize….but the area had no where to hide! Just a floor of flat inky black, like onyx glass. The walls were of the same type..she thought. Were they walls at all? They seemed to stretch on until infinity, as well as well as loom in so close she felt as if she were stuck in a tiny box.
She ran and ran, yet the distance covered seemed to be less than it should be. Was her opponent growing in size? Or was the floor merely rolling under her feet like logs on water?
It was just as she looked back that something hard smacked into her side and sent her sprawling a few feet to the ground, where she rolled and then came to a halt.
“Ow…” she muttered, rubbing her dazed head, cradling her bruised arm as she rolled to see a sharp blade coming down on her. She raised her keyblade in an attempt to save herself, closing her eyes tightly against the anticipated pain, only to hear a faint voice in the distance.
“….Kairi!”
Who’s calling my name?
“Kairi!”
That’s…Sora? The voice is really close now..
Suddenly there was the loud clang and screeching of metal against metal right above her head, and she slowly opened her eyes to get a nice view of Sora’s butt, abnormally close to her face as he stood over her, trying to push the large weapon away from her in sheer strength. She blinked and blushed automatically, regardless of whether it was the proper time or place. She scooted back out of the way to give Sora more room to move without worrying about her.
“….Darn!” she whispered to herself dejectedly, that gnawing feeling of defeat plaguing her gut. She was happy he’d saved her…but…
Once more she was the damsel in distress…
While she focused on this for a moments, trying to figure out at which point in her life her destiny had decided to laugh in her face and brand her as the girl who must be saved, Sora was busy clashing weapons and landing damaging hits on the present enemy. She managed to somehow space out and ignore the loud clanging, screeching, pounding and thunking noises, even as the enemy fell leaving Sora in victory.
“You did good, Kairi. You really held him off. He was tough.” came the encouraging and pleased voice of her savior, who was now facing her. His gloved palm was reached out to her, to help her get up. “Are you alright?”
I did good?
She was thrilled to hear such words, even of the grammar was wrong. Her face perked right up and she grinned at him, taking his hand and standing.
“I’m just great. Thanks.” She chirped softly, giggling happily and thus confusing Sora again. Her next statement was even more unexpected, but it made him smile.
“Will you teach me out to use this keyblade better? Riku just gave it to me and didn’t say how to really use it..” she asked hopefully, already trying to find her way out of the dark abyss. How had Sora even gotten in here?
“..Sure, Kairi.”
