'Ah, what a great day!'
This was the kind of thing His Majesty King Mickey loved to see for his home world of Disney Castle. It was for the sake of simple, happy moments like these that he'd fought so long and so hard even though the little ruler with a big heart did not enjoy fighting in the least. Of course, those days were behind him at the moment. Right now all Mickey cared about was enjoying the sunshine and whistling a catchy tune as he strolled down the clean, vibrant streets of town. It was a place so filled with picturesque life that it was like something out of a cartoon, a trait all of Disney Castle's inhabitants were quiet happy about. Bright, lively colours marked all of the burg's areas as its wide variety of inhabitants went about their daily business, a smile on each with a few obviously predictable exceptions.
Even though he was small and clad in a simple red outfit nobody the King passed by let him do so without saying "Good morning Your Majesty" or "Good to see you again, Your Highness", to which of course he would reply with a heartfelt greeting and each person's name. No, Mickey may not walk about wearing a crown all day like many rulers, but he cared about all the people who depended on him and they loved him in return.
'It's great to be back seeing old familiar faces after such a long time away,' he thought gleefully. Of course Mickey had spent plenty of quality time catching up with Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Goofy first(Friends were always the most important thing) but the people had to know that their monarch had returned as well. Rather than some big gathering and a speech from a balcony Mickey preferred to do it this way. Once word had spread he'd be sure to throw a big party at the castle and invite everyone to celebrate the safety of the worlds.
'Let's see, gotta order the cake from Brenda's bakery... Gladys will love to do the decorating for sure... oh, and the music! I can't forget about that. Maybe I can get out the old banjo and join in myself, he he he.'
Mickey Mouse raised a gloved hand to his mouth to cover it as he chuckled inside, a happy feeling as plain to see on him as the sun was in the cloudless sky. He hoped to invite Riku, Sora and Kairi as well. He'd send a letter to Destiny Islands tonight. Surely they of all people deserved to celebrate the new age of peace.
"Aha!" the mini-monarch said quietly with a gentle clap of his hands, realization coming over his face. As he stood at the street corner a brilliant idea came upon him: All of the worlds were at peace now and with the Keyblades they were all becoming more and more connected. It wasn't just his world that deserved a party, but all of them! Oh it would take a lot of planning and work, but certainly it would be worth it right? "I'd better hurry to Brenda's and let them know I'll need a lot more cake this time."
Yep, it was a great day.
Well... for most people it was at least. As Mickey turned the corner to head towards his favourite bakery he spotted a young dog child in the distance. The little tyke, who was actually around the same height as Mickey himself, wore a backwards red baseball cap and green t-shirt. The brown-furred infant beast was crying his eyes out and it wasn't hard to see why. Laying at the poor kid's feet was the majority of a scoop of chocolate ice cream, melting quickly onto the pavement under the beating of the bright sun. The King's eyes instantly filled with sympathy for the boy as he quickened his pace, slowing down just as he got closer. The nearby ice cream vendor, a tall black-coloured bull, was trying to calm the child down but to no avail. His offerings of a replacement weren't getting through the boy's sobbing.
"Hey there pal," came the mouse's understandably squeaky, The infant dog rubbed his eyes of tears. The sound of a voice at the same level as himself registered a lot more than the pleadings of the ice cream vendor above and behind him. Reddening eyes opened up to the world, only to see Mickey standing there with a smile, both hands held out by his sides in a playful manner.
"My... my ice cream..." the kid stuttered out, recognizing the large round ears as the King even amidst the watery distortion. Already he was starting to calm down a little. If the King was here then he could make everything better, right?
"Aw, don't worry little guy," Mickey said to the child currently equaling his physical stature. He recognized the kid now... little Harry Dawg. My he'd grown since the King had last been home! "I can fix that with a little magic trick!"
As the mouse started to wave his hands in a distracting fashion the one-man audience slowly started to stop crying and pay attention to the act. Mickey reached into his pocket and pulled out a hankie, then placed it over the now-empty cone still in the weakened grip of the canine.
"Now watch it very carefully," the King said as he walked around the boy in circles, still waving his hands as if casting a spell. "As I say the magic word... Alakazam!"
While distracting the boy with the trick the vendor behind the street side cart smiled as he handed the small mouse the replacement cone he'd been trying to give the boy since before His Majesty's arrival. Mickey took the ice cream as he passed behind Harry and spoke his magic words at about the same time. The boy's eyes stared intently at the white handkerchief as Mickey's left glove reached over top of it a moment later to pull it away, revealing... the new cone in the boy's hands!
"Thanks King Mickey!" the boy said with an innocent smile before bowing slightly and running away down the street. The monarch stood there tall, hypotthetically of course, and proud as he took pleasure from solving the unhappiness of another. The old empty cone remained hidden behind his back in both hands.
"Nice work Your Highness," said the bull behind the cart of frozen treats as he looked down proudly at the tiny ruler. "But how did you pull off the switch? I was watching the entire time."
"Oh you know how it is Joe," Mickey said with a coy wink as he moved his hands back out in front and tossed the empty cone into street-side receptacle. "A magician never reveals his secrets."
Both Mickey and Joe shared a short span of laughter together there on the curb before the King excused himself, needing to be off. Mickey promised to stop by on his way back to the castle for a nice chocolate scoop.
'If only all troubles were so easy to solve,' the miniature Majesty thought with a bit of sad reflection. Oddly enough he had allowed his usual brighter-side mentality to falter for a moment and it wasn't too hard for him to figure out why. The crying child had reminded him of a long time ago... one of Mickey's greatest personal failures. 'I hope you're all right, Captain Pete.'
The mouse slowed his pace across the sidewalk and looked slightly downward, seeming far less chipper than usual. If he hadn't encountered the bulky cat just a few days prior it was unlikely he'd have been reminded of the old days by a simple fallen scoop of ice cream, but Mickey didn't even know what had happened to his "arch-rival" after Pete and Maleficent set out to destroy the countless Heartless in the Castle That Never Was. Before working for the witch Pete had been imprisoned away from all the worlds... and Mickey had been the one to do it.
'Always causing trouble for others. I guess you haven't really changed even after all this time.' It was a sad memory, really. Mickey and Pete had never rally gotten along, always at odds with one another be it in just a begrudging way or a full-on antagonistic one. Generally they could be chalked up to Percival's brutish and selfish nature but even the mouse himself couldn't claim to not have gotten some amusement out of torturing the cat in retaliation now and again. 'It had all been in good fun at first, Pete. That's what I thought anyway.' At least once upon a time it had. After the building known as Disney Castle was built and Mickey became King Pete's antics had escalated as if to match his opponent's new station. The memories of trying to make peace with his long-time rival again and again unsuccessfully were a heavy burden for Mickey that he kept close to his heart so as to never forget. 'Things were just getting way too bad for me, Donald and Goofy to watch over you all the time...'
So the King had banished one of his citizens. For the greater good? That's what he thought, even now. Mickey hadn't hesitated much when the time came. Of course, because of his actions, Pete was found by Maleficent and became allied to the Heartless. Had Mickey's actions pushed his old "friend" down the darkest of all paths; a path Mickey's lingering innocent fear of the darkness that had yet to be fully dispelled couldn't let him understand?
Not really.
'We all do what our hearts command,' the King reminded himself with a re-emerging if less vibrant smile than before. It wasn't just some weightless platitude Mickey chanted to artificially drive away bad thoughts or something like that. It was a very true statement; if one couldn't follow one's own heart then they had no more reason to exist than the Nobodies. Mickey's choices were his and Pete's choices belonged to Pete. All he could do was ask his heart what was best for everyone and keep trying to walk that road no matter how much or how little darkness might seem to follow along the way. Mickey was sad that he had never been able to inspire the light in Pete's heart, but that didn't mean he gave up trying for others.
'There are young people like Sora and Riku and even little Harry just now who need me to be a role model they can look up to.' The King could never mistake that responsibility as lighter than it was, just as he'd promised himself not to when he accepted his role of royalty.
As he walked slowly with his head tilted slightly down in thought Mickey's black-dot nose began to perk at the scents wafting towards him. The mouse's similar eyes raised back up to look straight ahead at the door of his favourite bakery across the street and the sheep inside working away behind the glass widows making delicious bread and confectioneries. It took little more than that for the gloomier memories of evaporate and Mickey to focus on the here and now again. With an overtaking of child-like cheer the King began to walk across the street, whistling a happy tune once again for all his kingdom to enjoy.
His good friend Riku had reminded His Highness to always look forward to the dawn.
