-Blue off-the-shoulder "cloak" fastened at the chest with a silver shuriken-like thing, flaring out and running to the top of her boots. It upward pointing white wings attached to it approximately at the hip bones. There's a slit up the back of the garment, making two "tails."

On Rinoa's world, Adel, there are people called sorceresses, and pass on their power others before/when they die. These people are feared by the regular population, who can't use magic, because of their power.
Rinoa Heartilly grew up on Adel with a mostly normal childhood. She had a loving mother and father and attended school, and knew where to and and not to if she wanted to stay relatively safe. She was normal, and had no powers in the least.
It was never quite peaceful on Adel, though. The sorceresses that opted not to hide from public view made themselves all too known, their powers corrupting them into evil. Their dark hearts attracted Heartless, so they started appearing on Rinoa's world in hordes and began taking hearts away from the defenseless people. The most powerful of corrupted sorceresses, one that had come to usurp territory from the normal people for herself, was commanding these dark creatures. Heart stealers? It was a terrible time for Adel, and Rinoa feared she herself or her family would be attacked as well…
But then she met a certain brunette man. A young man at the time. She was young as well, in her teens.
Rinoa met Leon when he took a trip to her home world on a mission to teach the people there how to fight off the Heartless. A true hero! He was the leader of the Heartless Resistance, but he seemed so...troubled. While he was there, Leon helped the people defeat an evil sorceress who was commanding the heartless, but Rinoa, who had joined in the battle alongside others of the resistance group, ended up inheriting her powers when she was killed, much to her secret horror. Of all the sorceresses, she gained the powers from the worst, most hated and feared! She had become a sorceress, her of all people! She could tell no one..
Leon had to return home once his work was done. He didn't know much about sorceresses, but Rinoa knew that if anyone found out she was the new sorceress she would be in danger. Sorceresses were feared, hated, isolated and hunted at times. Seeing no other option, she decided to join the Heartless Resistance in Traverse Town. Rinoa figured out how to make a gummi ship from Leon and then followed him, effectively running away from home.
Rinoa spent a few years in Traverse Town with the Radiant Garden gang, becoming good friends with them. She took up residence there, and even had Merlin help her learn to use her new magical powers so she could control them and use them for good, especially since she was in the Heartless Resistance. On a whim, she decided to tell Leon exactly why she ran away during a day spent hanging out together around town (she would thereafter refer to this as their "first date").
When she learned that Heartless had turned up on her home again, Rinoa asked Cid if he could make her a ring like Leon's, but purposefully left out the information that she was planning to leave.
It would serve as a comfort for her. She hated having to be separated from people she cared about, so she wanted to take something of his with her, even if it was a copy. Cid eventually asked Leon if he could borrow the ring and didn't tell him why, but soon Cid got busy with setting up a new store and asked Rinoa to hold on to it for him until he could make the fake.
She still had it with her when urgent word came that her world was REALLY in trouble and about to be destroyed. She left immediately to help fight them off and face who she was now. The only thing left in her wake was a note explaining that she didn't want anyone following her despite how much she didn't want to leave them. She knew Leon was busy looking for "The Key", and she wanted to try going home to face what she was now head-on instead of hiding from it in Traverse Town.
Hopefully he didn’t need his ring when he returned, because it was certainly long gone. It didn’t matter if he needed it or not, she wouldn’t have returned it while they remained separated.
Lucky for her, as soon as she arrived back on Adel, it was in the midst of a battle so she had to go right to work. The people were stunned and frightened when they saw her sorceress powers in action, but they also saw she was HELPING them. Rinoa returned and saved the day, and as a sorceress, no less! They decided she was a a guardian to them...at first. Over the following year that she stayed, the people, even her parents to a degree, started to fear more and more that she would just start abusing he powers like so many sorceresses had before her. Was it unfounded? She was using her powers way more now than she ever had in the Heartless Resistance... Rinoa even started to become concerned that she relying on her magic more than she should.
Fearing that she was going down the terrifying path of corruption, she sought help from some wise elders on what she might be able to do to keep herself more safe from the temptations of darkness.
That's when she came to learn about the stories of the "Knights". According to the stories, there had been strong hearted good sorceresses in the days of old, and every well-known sorceress in their history had had a strong-hearted "knights" to protect them and keep them on the purest path possible, so not to fall for the inherent dark ways that came with power.
Relieved that there was hope out there, she came to the conclusion that she couldn't live on Adel forever the way she was. It was becoming obvious that she didn't have a "Knight" here and she knew she'd need one eventually. How many more years could she stay here before she became too tainted? After some thought, she realized who her "knight" was, not that it was unexpected. It was time for her to leave.
After writing a letter to Leon, she secured Adel’s safety and again left her home world.
