Audition post (400 words):
Ah, yet another beautiful day in Wonderland, world of the strange and unusual. A clearing was the setting of the scene as a young boy approached the edge of a wood. He looked at the forest expectantly, it's pink and purple trees shimmering in the sunlight while polka dots of others distracted the eye.
A signpost stood in front of him, names of the most strange and fantastic places littering it's many signs as each pointed off into a different direction. He paced around it eagerly but as he reached the spot where he'd begun once more he was disappointed. Not one of the signs held the name of his destination and he was utterly lost.
He suddenly heard something however, something over the usual sounds of the forest that were to be expected. It was low but it wa slowly growing louder. "Twas brillig, and the slithy toves, did gire an gimble in the wabe. He knew those words...he didn't know from where but he knew those words. "All mimsy were, the borogoves, and the momoraths, outgrabe."
As the words suddenly grew louder, he looked up to find the source of the sound and let out a short yelp before tripping on a rock and falling straight onto the ground. In looking up he'd not taken note of the rocks because his gaze was even now, still fixated in the creature now sitting atop the signpost. It was a strange one to be sure, purple and stripped with alternating hues of said color. It's face was it's main attraction however, what with it's oddly...eerie, self contented, mischievous, witty smile. It was, or looked like, a cat.
"And what might you be doing out here my boy?" The cat asked the boy who, startled at the silence being broken, sat up and addressed the creature properly. "I-I'm...Charlie sir. Um...c-could you tell me which way to go?" He asked, hoping to make the most out of this...conversation if you could call it that. "Welllllll..." The cat said, dragging out the word as he rested his head between his front paws and rolled his eyes once. "Which way you ought to go...depends on where you want to get to." The answer took the boy a few seconds to chew over before he realized the meaning and replied accordingly. "Oh, forgive me, I'm looking for the Queen sir. The Queen of Hearts."
"Hmmmm." The strange cat tilted his head to one side, thinking to himself for a short second before speaking again. "Well if you want to see the Queen...you should go that way." He said, pointing his clawed left finger at a path to the right. "Ah, but that's the long way...you could always go that way though." He once more illustrated his point by pointing his right index finger in the opposite direction. "That's the longer way. But then again, you might want to take the low road." At which point he raised his body so only the top of his torso was still on the post and the rest was in the air, with his feet out to the sides. He then proceeded to point his left foot to the northwest. "Or you could just go the high road." He finished by pointing his right foot to the northeast. The boy would most likely find his answer insane, and perhaps he was, but did he care? No, not at all. He was content to be crazy, it was more fun than being sane after all. If this cat got one thing out of life, it was undoubtedly self satisfaction.
"But sir." The boy began after the strange cat had finished giving his...directions of sorts. "You're speaking nonsense!" The cat chuckled a bit at this as he lowered his lower body and raised his upper body upward so he was standing. "Oh but nonsense..." He then tilted his head to the left, to which it rolled off of his neck, down his left arm, and ended up in his hand. "Is the best kind of sense." He continued, rolling it back to the center where it once more rested on his neck. "Because there's no sense." He then rolled it to the right, once more into a hand. "Like nonsense." After he'd finished he once again rolled it back to the center where it rested on his neck once more before he plopped down on his stomach again and crossed his front paws. "Then again, nonsense is a sense in itself so that doesn't make any sense does it? Ah but it's nonsense, it doesn't need to make sense. Makes sense to me." He snickered in his mind before he continued his lecture.
"You see nonsense, is a bit like common sense and incense. They don't seem to have anything in common with each other but they both use your sense of smell. Especially when something's fishy." The cat spoke as the boy was a bit...confused by this point. "Now...where are you going my boy?" He queried as if he'd had a sudden memory lapse but truly he was just seeing what the boy's reply would be after all this. The boy got up from the ground and looked quizzically at the being before him. "I'm going to see the Queen of Hearts sir..." He responded. "Well then, by all means you should take the middle path." Suddenly a light illuminated the forest path directly behind the sign. He could have easily told him that before but what fun would that be? That wasn't his style at all after all. The boy peeked around it to see where the light was coming from before walking around the signpost, mouth agape, and turning to the cat again, who by this point had already turned to face him again.
"Right through the Tulgey Wood. You'll get to the Queen of Hearts in no time." The boy turned around, partly elated that he was finally going to get to his destination, partly relived that this... more than unusual encounter was going to be over. "Thank you sir...I'll be off then." As he turned to leave however he was stopped abruptly by the voice of the creature chiming up again. "Oh...but do be careful if you take that path...the Jub-Jub Birds are out this time of day and the Bandersnatches will be just frumious in a few hours." He ended his sentence with another light chuckle as the boy continued to walk, though he was a bit less elated at the thought of possibly hostile resistance just to drop off a delivery for the Queen...then again he was even more overjoyed to be done conversing with this unusual beast of the world of the strange.
The cat couldn't help but wonder what this boy could be wanting to see the Queen for, but, that wasn't exactly his business. Of course, even if it wasn't exactly his business, it was partly his business, because quite frankly, everything in Wonderland was his business, and of course if everything in Wonderland where his business, this was his business as well, and he would of course find out what it was all about sooner or later. "Sooner or later...later or sooner, who really cares, the only time really worth worrying about is tea time after all." His thoughts would seem to be as jumbled as his speech but none the less if one were to pick it all apart they would find an extremely complex system of words that all made their point in one way or another while still having no point at all.
As he walked off, the cat, still atop his signpost perch, watched on as the boy slowly got farther into the dark of the woods before he could no longer be seen, and with a sigh he himself, resting his head on his right forepaw, thought of what next to do. Then he recalled what he'd thought of earlier. "Tea time! Of course!" He declared in his mind as he continued to sit relaxed. "I'll pay a visit to the Mad Hatter. The March Hare should be around today and it's just in time for tea, not thtat there is a time for tea because anytime and every time is tea time. Not that I actually have the time on me." Without a word, or another thought, his darker colored stripes began to unravel, almost like a sweater, and vanish into thin air. Once only the lighter stripes were left, they soon followed suit and left only a pair of eyes, gazing at nothing yet taking in everything, which of course disappeared as well, and at last left only his smile, a smile that would seem to always be content, slowly fading out, tooth by tooth, until at last even that smile was no longer present. Ah, but even when the smile was gone, it's memory would always live on until it would once more appear at the most opportune, or inopportune, of moments. As it always was with that creature of the random, yet he was wise and witty beyond that which most could, or would, ever know. His name would ne'er be forgotten in Wonderland, after all, who could forget the Cheshire Cat.
A few more thoughts would echo as that smile faded however, just as if to signal his departure as well as he did his arrival. "When I was just a kitten, they said I'd be a gem, but now that I'm a Cheshire Cat it's odd how odd I am! I own a feather pillow, but I slumber on the sod. Oh obviously, quite obviously, I'm odd."
