There's a fun little quiz here, of which I wonder what sort of scores are commonly gained. Mine was a 100% on correct usage, but I know of myself that I sometimes use its or it's wrongly.

The difference is obvious and easy. It's is only a shortened form of It is. Like Don't.

The confusion lies with when you are referring to something that belongs to "it". That's usually when people get confused. Then, if you're like me, you just keep making the mistake even after you're aware it's a mistake because it's become a habit.
