All right, everybody! I've got a real winner of an RP planned out, but I'm going to need several dedicated contestants and a little bit of help. Read below to find out more.
ALL TOURNAMENT SLOTS FILLED! AUDIENCE, PLACE YOUR BETS!
Story starts out as follows.
Deep within the Underworld, Hades is attempting to strike a deal with the god of war and blood-lust, Ares. Hades proposes that he and Ares gather an army of mortals and demi-gods to "preemptively" attack certain other worlds, particularly those where Heartless or Nobodies are growing in number and strength. Hades suggests that Olympus, like so many other worlds, will eventually be overrun by darkness and void if these foreign powers go unchecked, and argues that only if the gods conquer and oversee the worlds can these threats be stopped. Hades true goal, however, is to harvest enough souls from other worlds to achieve unmatched power and thus finally succeed in overthrowing the other Olympian deities.
Ares is unsure, however. Like Hades, his nature and disposition are less than welcome on Olympus and he prefers to work independent of Zeus' authority. And while Hades' idea does offer him the kind of fight he's been spoiling for for centuries, Ares knows better than to start a war until he's sure he can finish it. If, for instance, they were to conquer worlds that couldn't produce strong warriors to fill the ranks, any army the two gods formed would be spread impossibly thin in no time at all. It's with this logic that Ares convinces the god of death that he needs to see a demonstration of the strength of those from other worlds.
To appease Ares and get the war he wanted, Hades conceived of the Death Wish Tournament.
At first he sent his minions to other worlds, advertising the tournament as offering "fabulous and expensive prizes for competitors, including the Grand Prize: one wish granted by the gods themselves!". However, the stigma of having to fight in the Underworld doesn't draw very many volunteers, and as time wears on the god of death decides to take matters into his own hands. His tactics were as underhanded as ever: kidnap a few people, pretend to hold a few valuable pieces of information, apply various forms of coercion and deception as necessary. Finally, after months of preparation, Hades had gathered enough other-world warriors to hold his tournament.
Many would compete. Only one would triumph...
In terms of actual dynamics, the tournament will work like this:
Each player comes up with their own reason for joining Hades' tournament. For most, it should be something other than "I want the prize" unless that reeeeeeeeeeaaally fits their character's personality. This is important, as it will later form the backbone of the actual 'story plot' part of the tournament.
To provide some OOC incentive, a certain amount of Munny can be offered to those who make the semi-finals, finals, and a big reward to whoever makes Champion. After all, that's just how these things are run. I will need a staff member to authorize this and provide the Munny, as I certainly don't have enough myself to pull this off.
To make it more than just straight player-vs-player, however, a few additional elements are included:
In Battle and Out Of Battle
Players will be required to be actively involved in a separate "out of battle" thread which will parallel the "in battle" thread where all the fights take place. The "out of battle" thread will not only give the characters a chance to interact but also for some manner of plot to form, which could involve rescuing the people Hades kidnapped and/or exposing his plan, destroying the soul energy Hades is gathering, or something entirely different that the players come up with amongst themselves. It's a big Underworld, with all manner of possibilities!
Alliances & Betrayals
Battles in the tournament can go one of two ways. Of course there's the traditional PvP... but also the chance of on-the-spot alliances. If, at any point during a match, players decide that their characters would be more likely to team up against Hades / other players, all they have to do is announce it and both agree to the alliance. What happens then is that the newly formed team is forced by Hades to duke it out with a monster(s) of his choice for that round instead of each other. This can lead to players teaming up against other players in later rounds... but there's a catch! Players can also break an alliance at any time, and there'll be good reason for doing so! If a team of two or more players wins the tournament they all have to split the prize equally. This makes the tournament rather like The Weakest Link, in that the strongest character/RPer might not win if an alliance of weaker ones decide to give him/her the boot.
I'm going to leave this thread open for sign ups and suggestions. The basics are all here but the details, like tournament rules, are still open for discussion.
Also, I'd like to take this chance to say that I plan to audition for Hades before this gets rolling, but I'd also like to compete with one of my other characters. Therefore, if a staff member would be so gracious as to volunteer I'd like to appoint them as the official tournament judge.

PROPOSED TOURNAMENT RULES
- All arena rules apply, particularly the 5 day absence rule.
- Bets may be made by non-participants in the bidding stands as desired.
- To keep a decent pace, each fight lasts only two weeks. If there is no decisive win by that time, the judge will review the fight and declare a winner based on quality of tactics and writing. The winner will then put up a "finishing post" in which they can end the fight how they see fit (no kills).
- A description of the arena will be provided prior to the beginning of each fight. The arena design will present new and interesting challenges for each battle, and become more challenging and involved as players advance.
- Alliances and betrayals may be made at any time.
- If players ally during a fight, Hades will send one or more monsters into the arena for the players to overcome.
- Remember to remain active in the Out Of Battle thread whenever your character isn't fighting in the arena.
- These rules are open to adjustment until the first fight begins.
