Audition post (400 words):
(Scenario: Goofy teaching a 16 year old son Max about Heartless.)
“MAXIE YOU’RE OKAY!” Goofy saw his son walking around the castle, wide eyed and in awe. Which was what solicited that cry of joy. Goofy came clunking down the walkway, and tackled his son. He began squeezing the young man, and putting his face against his son’s.
“Oh Max, why’d ya hafta go and leave like that? Ya didn’t even say good-bye to yer old man.” Max began to squirm in his dad’s arms.
“DAD! Get off, your embarrassing me!” Goofy let go only after Max had made several attempts to free himself of his father’s vice-like grip.
“Sorry ‘bout that son, but I’m just so glad to see ya. Hyuk.” Max chuckled lightly, and rubbed the back of his head. The two stood up, and Goofy put an arm around his son. As the two walked down the hallway, Goofy began to question him.
“So Max, did ya train hard? Did ya do what ya were told, when you were told? Did ya brush yer teeth?”
“Dad, there’s something I have to tell you...” His father cut him off.
“I’m so proud of ya son, going and following in yer old man’s footsteps. Ya know, someday you’ll make a good captain of the Royal Knights.” Max tried to speak again, but he stopped. The two had come to the quarters that Goofy called home.
“Oh yeah! I suppose I best tell ya about some enemies ya might see around. He then proceeded to tell his son about the Heartless, the varieties they came in, where one would find a certain type, and the best way to take them down. He then told his son the same information in regards to Nobodies. This took a few hours, and then Goofy stood up (for during this time the two had sat down).
“Be right back Max! I got somethin’ fer ya.” Goofy walked into his bedroom. He came back out a few moments later with something circular and metal in his hands. But on his way back to his son he tripped, and the metallic item went flying. It bounced off the wall, hit the ceiling, and then hit another wall. It then flew into his son’s lap. Goofy got up, and walked to his son.
“It’s my first shield. I want you to have it. Use it well, and well, it’ll protect ya when I can’t.” Tears welled up in his son’s eyes, and Goofy hugged his son. Max pushed away, and Goofy became worried.
“What’s wrong Maxie?” Max then explained how he didn’t go and train to be a soldier, but how he went and rode around on a skateboard instead, competing in races and contests to see who could pull of the most tricks. Goofy smiled.
“Max while I’m not too happy ya lied to me all this time, I’m happy ya told me the truth.” Max asked his father if he was disappointed in him.
“The only reason I’m disappointed is because ya lied to me. If skateboardin’ is somethin’ ya want to do, I’m not goin’ to stop ya. That wouldn’t make me a very good dad if I did. Besides, I just want ya to be happy. I’m proud of ya no matter what ya do.” The two hugged, and then Max tried to hand him back the shield.
“Keep it son. If you ever get into trouble, it’ll help. Just promise me you won’t try and use it like those skateboards you like so much.” Max laughed and nodded.
“Good, now let me show ya how to use that there shield. It works differently then ya’d think.” Despite all that had happened today, Goofy felt it was going to turn out to be a good day. Sure his son hadn’t taken the path he thought he had for all these years, but at least he was happy. And he was also man enough to admit that he didn’t go and become a warrior. Truth be told, Goofy wasn’t quite sure he wanted his son to be a warrior anyway. The thought of his son in the midst of a dangerous battle just didn’t sit well with him. So he guessed everything worked out alright.
