“Sora!” A strong voiced called through the air.
The young warrior turned away from the bonfire he had lost himself within just in time to spot an object flying at him. Putting up his hand, he caught it merely an inch away from his nose. Breathing out a sigh of relief, the boy turned his hand around and looked at the thrown item.
“A…Paopu Fruit?” He asked questioningly. It had been so long since he’d seen one…
“Yup. Now if you’d return the favor, split it in half and toss me a piece, would ya?”
Sora looked up as he pulled on the fruit. He saw a strange warrior, he was tall and was wearing a black trenchcoat. It was very loose and hanged off of him almost like a cape around his feet, but it was kept tight around his waist, wrists, and shoulders by several white straps tied to him.
The young KeyBlade Wielder tried to see his face, but the light of the fire seemed to stop just before his neck.
“This thing is supposed to intertwine our Destinies…Do you even know me? I mean, this is kind of a big deal if you believe in it.” Asked Sora, but even as he asked this, his good nature got the best of him and he tossed the fruit to the man.
A black gloved hand quickly reached out and snatched it, the man chuckling softly.
“I know enough.”
Pulling his trenchcoat open a little, he slid his half of the fruit inside a hidden pocket.
“Who are you then?” Asked the boy.
“Hmm, I will not answer that question right now, not only for personal distaste, but because once I tell you a name, I will not reveal another, and I wish to know which name you are worthy of knowing.”
As if the words alone were enough to make one cautious, the voice in which they were said bled maliciousness. They were not said in a mean or threatening way, but one knew they were directed as a warning.
Standing up and gripping his hand into a tight fist, Sora’s Kingdom Key Keyblade appeared in his grip.
Though it could not be seen, the man smiled as the KeyBlade came into view.
“I don’t want to fight you, but I’ve been in this situation enough to know that’s all you desire…”
“It’s not just you I want, sorry to break it to you kid, you’re just part of the whole package.”
“Do what?”
“The KeyBlade, the KeyBlade of Light, that is what I want. You’re needed as well, yes, but more for the fact that if I just took it, it would just return to you.”
“Well I’m not going to come easily!” Yelled the little warrior, lowering down and gripping the blade tightly.
“I never expected you to.”
Reaching into his cloak once more, he pulled out a long, thin black object that was lined with spikes. Just as Sora was wondering what kind of weapon it was, the being held it out in front of him horizontal and moved his other hand behind it. Suddenly a brilliant white light stretched from the two ends of the weapon and converged on his hand before spreading once more, this time in a straight line from his hand to the middle of the item.
In the light of the weapon, his face was revealed, or more in truth, the white porcelain mask that disguised it was shown. It was completely featureless and spread from one ear to the other, its only blemish being two slanted holes that revealed the colorations of his eyes, that of unnatural silver, so metallic appearing that one almost wondered if they were fake. His hair shone a brilliant and pure white, standing out against the darkness of the night and of his clothing.
“Well boy, I suggest you start moving.”
Firing off the white energy arrow, it screamed as it flew towards Sora, the warrior wincing at the sound just before lifting up his blade and slamming it down, hitting the arrow head on and splitting it in two, the pair flying into the water beyond him.
Looking behind him, Sora remembered the partiers for the first time since the mysterious man’s arrival. Looking back at the enigmatic warrior as, without even moving, a second arrow began to appear, the warrior of Light took off as quickly as he could in hopes of diverting the being from the busy area, leading him towards the patch of palm trees at the back of the island.
“Hmph, so worried for people he doesn’t even know…” Muttered the being before dismissing the energy arrow and taking off after him.
Gripping his KeyBlade tightly as Sora heard the attacker behind him, the warrior pushed off with his foot and spun around in midair, landing on the top of a palm tree and then shoving off once more, the pursuer rushing too quickly to completely dodge the attack of the Keyblade.
A blinding light filled the area as Sora felt his weapon connect, hating the violence, but knowing it was the only way to end it. He pushed harder trying to finish this in one blow, the light so blinding he couldn’t even making out his own blade.
Soon Sora reached his limit and simply held his blade tight to his opponent, refusing to move. Slowly the light emanating from the impact began to lessen, diminishing until finally Sora could open his eyes and focus them, but the instant his eyes worked, he believed they didn’t.
His blade had indeed impacted, but it was not against the aggressor. A large white shield enveloped with golden chains was holding his blade back, completely untouched from the impact. In the center of it appeared to be a Keyhole in the shape of what could only be described as a screaming face. His mouth gaping, Sora’s eyes locked with his opponents, full of questions.
“So its true…The KeyBlade, ultimate in attack, able to destroy any weapons effortlessly. Well meet your antithesis, the LockShield, the ultimate in defense, able to block any weapon effortlessly.” Said the warrior. “If this had been any other shield, it would have cracked. If yours had been any other blade, it would have shattered. But we have them, the legendary weapons of our realms. Only against one another could they have survived such an impact, perhaps enhanced even more by our Purity and matching Paths…”
“What are you talking about?” Asked Sora
“Heh…It’ll become clear soon enough.”
Jumping back and landing on the beach below, Sora breathed out harshly, trying to wake himself up. It had been too long since he had fought, and his foe’s mysterious lectures were beginning to distract him, he needed to wake up and focus or else he didn’t stand a chance. He could worry about the riddles later, this enemy, with his weapons aiming for his neck, was a more pressing problem.
“Well it still won’t help you!” Yelled out the boy, gripping his Blade once more. “You-”
“You’re about to say that I won’t stand a chance, right?” Asked the masked man from above him. “Maybe you’re thinking, it’s a shield, what can I do with it to attack you? Talk to your friend Donald about that…Or was it Goofy? No matter. Or maybe, maybe you’re thinking that if you keep attacking, I’ll be forced to block and block and block until I hopefully get tired before you?”
The warrior laughed, holding up his left arm which the LockShield was equipped on. The metal straps that had wrapped around his arm to keep to from detaching retracted into it and it fell from his form.
But it did not land. Seconds before it crashed, the shield stopped in midair and slowly began to float up until it was level with the warrior’s shoulder.
“As you can see, I have no need to exert myself in order to block any and all of your attacks.” Said the warrior, smirking as he brought his bow up once more. “It’s too bad for you, only that one little weapon. Just goes to show you shouldn’t rely on your mystic weapon alone, I can tell you that.”
A sly smile spread across Sora’s face.
“You claim that I only have one weapon? You’re wrong there!” Exclaimed the little fighter. “I’ll show you what kind of trouble you’re in for!”
Closing his eyes and focusing his energy, Sora suddenly exploded with power, a wave quickly enveloping his body, rising from his feet up and changing his black clothes into silver as he transformed into his Final Form.
The Kingdom Key within his hand dissolved into energy as Oblivion and Oathkeeper appeared floating behind him in an X formation.
Opening his eyes and smirking as he began to float, Sora moved his hands to his side and the two KeyBlades split, one floating a few inches away from each arm.
“You’re not the only one whose weapon can fly, in fact, I do believe I outdid you.” Remarked Sora with confidence.
The Warrior, however, was unaffected. His eyes still radiated of concentration, in fact, they almost seemed to be frustrated.
“Fool. Taking on two Tainted KeyBlades, you are just a child aren’t you? You don’t know the hidden might within the Pure KeyBlade you so easily toss aside!” Scorned the enigmatic warrior. “I’ll show you the error of your ways!”
Roaring loudly, the cloaked fighter jumped down and charged forward as the blinding light of his arrow came to life once more. Sora was nearly caught off guard as the charge was so fierce, an arrow being shot and soaring towards him within seconds, Oathkeeper quickly moving in front of him to block the shot as the sounding of another came within hearing, Oblivion swiveling to Sora’s back to block the second shot as well before a third was fired.
Sora’s eyes were wide in shock as he kept looking from one side to the other, the arrows seemingly coming out of nowhere despite their brilliance. Their speed was intense and their strength was quickly increasing, he was barely managing to keep up.
“Such a fool…”
A voice rang out from everywhere and nowhere at once, echoing all around him.
“The Warrior of Light and you don’t even know how to use your hidden power properly, for your KeyBlade nor yourself.”
Blast after blast was shot and Sora could feel his KeyBlades beginning to slow down, their strength waning.
“Someone who puts in enough time, effort, will, anyone who wants it badly enough, needs it, can grow stronger than these Tainted Keyblades you use, a stick could stand up to them if it was strengthened with enough rage or determination, or even through skill and speed alone they could overpower you.”
Sora was beginning to get annoyed by the countless taunts and confusing lectures, but thanks to them and the arrows, he was beginning to realize how this foe was working.
Dashing forward as an energy arrow flew at him, Sora blocked the shot with Oathkeeper just as Oblivion came forward and pressed tightly against the air itself.
A white glow emanated before Sora and the masked assailant appeared once more, revealing the Oblivion to be pressed tight to his neck.
“Hmph, so much for your speech, I learned you’re trick!” Mocked Sora as he smirked.
“I never said you couldn’t get better, faster, smarter, stronger, did I child?” Asked the man factually. His eyes looked beyond the boy and focused. “However, you are still making the mistake of using Tainted Keyblades…”
Sora, the words once more confusing him, followed the man’s eyes and looked behind him, gasping in shock at the sight before him.
Upon the ground, shattered into 4 pieces, was the Oathkeeper KeyBlade. Slowly it began to fracture and disappear into pure energy.
“If you trained and focused, searched and learned, you could do my little trick too young Warrior of Light, and others as well. It’d be wise if you did as soon as possible too, as it won’t be long before other warriors are strong enough to be able to do this with basic weapons.”
Scowling in anger, Sora turned towards the warrior, but once again was stopped short of making any sort of move as the LockShield flashed out of nowhere, ramming into, shattering, and dismissing Oblivion.
“But then again, in truth, it’s already much too late for you to learn any new tricks to help you.”
Screaming in rage and panic, Fenrir and Sleeping Lion appeared behind Sora as Oathkeeper and Oblivion had just moments ago. Acting with near blinding speed, the blades swept around and slammed into the warrior’s gut, forcing him into the air with the impact, Sora flipping around and kicking his chin hard with his foot as the two blades whirled around once more and slashed at his side, then began a whirlwind of strikes around the KeyBlade Wielder, hitting his enemy again, again, again, again, and again, faster and harder with each passing second.
Finally the whirlwind ended, but only to converse on the warrior in one spot, the center of his chest, hitting with full force and causing a large explosion of energy to consume the two, throwing him hard to the ground below as Sora floated down, breathing hard and beginning to wear.
Groaning audibly, the warrior slowly got to his feet. Even before he stood up straight, a laugh began to ring out from behind his mask.
“Well, now THAT is an ability…” Exclaimed the being. “That did some good damage, I’m actually rather proud of you now.”
Sora looked at him almost disbelieving. Indeed, yes, even Organization XIII’s members had taken more damage than that to finish them, but none of them had expelled so much of their own energy…He barely sounded tired at all.
“I suspect that if you had as much time with your KeyBlade as I have with my LockShield, we could most certainly have been the predicted “Even Match“, indeed you may have earned a fearsome name as well if you furthered other abilities and picked up another weapon, but at this current stage and your insistence upon using…those….It is mostly a challenge, not a true fight.”
Glaring at the man, Sora called Fenrir and Sleeping Lion in front of him, preparing for another assault.
“I guess you need more examples of how even a strong weapon can defeat a Tainted mystic weapon, let alone how easily a Pure one can…” Said the warrior as he sighed. “I won‘t even bother with my own Abilities...”
Dashing forward through the trees, the dark warrior began his assault once more. Sora was prepared this time and sent the two blades flying towards the enemy.
The Enigma smirked slightly at the sudden boldness and blocked the first attack with his shield, pushing against it and using it as a pivot to turn himself, shoving off of it and increasing his speed, but his need for speed proved to be a mistake as the second KeyBlade rammed into his shoulder and spun him about before the two came around, hitting him again and knocking him to the ground.
“Smart.” Complimented the assailant.
Kicking his feet and boosting himself onto his hands, pushing off and swiveling around in midair, the warrior kicked away Fenrir as the blade attempted to hit him once more, the LockShield blocking and knocking away Sleeping Lion as it honed into him as well. Moving his hand to the bow, a large arrow of white energy formed in his grip, then suddenly split into four.
Smirking as Sora held up his hands to call back the blades, the masked attacker let the shots fly towards their intended target, hearing a most enticing and thrilling cry as two of them managed to hit their mark, slamming into the Bearer’s shoulders and throwing him back, the others being blocked by the KeyBlades.
Landing hard on the group, the enemy rushed towards Sora as he got up from the ground and brought about his KeyBlades in front of him, protecting him as the masked offender brought down his bow, slamming it against the makeshift barrier.
“Do you wish for me to shatter these two as well?”
Sora looked up in realization, that the warrior was not aiming for him anymore, but his defending KeyBlades.
Gripping his bow tightly, the white energy encased it entirely as it was slammed down once more, fracturing the two blades deeply.
Pulling the blades back to him and focusing, they dispersed into energy, attempting to save them from the same fate that Oblivion and Oathkeeper had suffered. His mind ran through all the KeyBlades he had, but before he could think well enough of their properties, the cloaked fighter attacked him, swinging his energy-encased bow and missing barely as Sora rolled across the ground to the side, then rolled backwards, trying to put distance between them, but it was quickly filled within seconds.
Groaning with frustration, Sora turned his mind to the first KeyBlades he could remember and quickly materialized Ultima Weapon and Kingdom Key to block the killer’s bow.
“Good! Now come on! Fight back!” Roared the warrior, a sick and twisted tone of happiness in his voice.
Gritting his teeth, Sora called the weapons to his hands and slashed at the warrior, who ducked under the cut and brought around his bow, slamming it hard into Ultima Weapon before pulling back as the other blade came back and aimed for his neck, coming short by mere hundreds of a unit.
Flying forward, the KeyBlade Bearer spun on his heel and kicked at the warrior’s side, but was stopped by his hand and the bow was brought down upon it, blocked as well by the Ultima Weapon, the two deflecting off each other and pushing, the warriors spinning and coming about once again, the bow clashing against the two weapons and grinding hard against one another.
Shoving off to distance themselves for mere milliseconds before coming back together, the bow lay horizontal and pushed fiercely against the two KeyBlades.
~Why isn’t he using that shield?~ Sora’s mind wondered, his eyes distracted for a mere moment as the clash caused a flash of energy, revealing the Shield to be behind the warrior.
“Because it currently has no use, I’ll have more fun if I fight you with this at your current level.” Responded the warrior almost eerily, having seen Sora’s eyes peering behind him.
Looking at him in slight shock before focusing himself again, Sora pulled back his swords and ducked down as the Bow thrusted above him, rising up quickly and ramming his shoulders into his foe’s stomach, flinging him back then rushing towards him, hitting his shoulder hard with a KeyBlade then whirling around and sweeping out his feet with the other, causing the warrior to fall to the ground.
Actually laughing as the warrior hit back-first on the ground, he lifted up his legs and spun around, hitting away the KeyBlade Wielder as he got onto his hands and pushed off, landing on his feet once more. As he looked at Sora, his eyes seemed to change, taking on a darker tone.
“This has been rather fun, but unfortunately, I am keeping my partners waiting and thus I shall end this!”
Sora brought about his weapons once more, but instantly saw the futility as the enemy’s speed increased even greater than it was before, the bow slamming into Ultima Weapon and virtually dissolving it upon impact, the weapon shattering into splinters down to the hilt before Sora let it go, fear flooding his mind as he turned and tried to run, only to find the Warrior had already moved behind him.
Sora gasped as the shield flew in front of him and pressed tight against his chest, the warrior placing his hand on it, his other hand holding onto the Kingdom Key and Sora’s own fist, keeping it locked onto the blade.
“I have graded your worthiness, and thus, I’ve decided on which answer I shall give your question.” Spoke the warrior almost casually.
Suddenly, a brilliant light radiated from the shield and Sora’s body began to feel very heavy except for where the warrior’s hand was placed. Hating the sensation and feeling sick, the warrior of Light began to struggle and fight against whatever was happening, kicking at the being and pushing at his shoulder with his free hand, trying to get him away.
“I shall give you my true name, as one full of talent and potential as you will obviously earn it in the future, and as I said before, I will not reveal a second name, whether either was the real or fake.”
Morbid curiosity filling his mind, Sora’s eyes finally looked down even as he continued to yell, kick, and push, but all stopped as the sight registered within his mind. The LockShield had opened itself upon his chest and the warrior’s hand had gone through it. It was like he had become water, the man’s hand entered his chest almost effortlessly, the penetration causing a soft “ripple” outwards, as if his very existence was being pieced.
The warrior leaned forward and whispered into Sora’s ear just as the KeyBlade Bearer felt as if he had become nothing more than water, his very thoughts sluggish and weary.
The attacker’s arm glowed with a brilliant white light as Sora’s eyes dimmed and grew distant. Slowly, the light began to lessen until it returned to normal, but the instant it did, Sora’s body began to glow just as brightly, almost as a response. Tightening his grip on the boy’s hand, the warrior watched as Sora’s body began to merge with his KeyBlade, the white energy enveloping the mystical weapon entirely, glowing even brighter, becoming whiter than white if such a thing was possible.
Breathing out and pulling his hand away, the LockShield closed and began its path around the killer. The KeyBlade continued to shine and a smile crossed his lips.
“Mission Complete. I wonder how my brethren did…”
Looking over his shoulder at the island, thinking to all the inhabitants and visitors of it. His smirk grew wider.
“Aren’t you all in for a surprise…”
A black mist began to gather around the warrior until suddenly hundreds of shadow-like tendrils extended from his body and pierced the very air, pulling and tugging apart existence itself until a black swirling mass of energy appeared in front of him. Stepping through this makeshift gateway, the warrior couldn’t help but feel a sense of intense power and pride with what he had just accomplished…
Seconds after the warrior had stepped through the portal, and just before it closed in an explosion of black energy, a white piece of paper drifted through, as if a gentle breeze had personally delivered it. Fluttering slowly, it gently landed on the sand, black bold letters standing out against its ivory white background, awaiting a reader…
