Audition post (400 words):
"Enjoy your math class," the smug-sounding teenager told his younger best friend as the spiky brown-haired hero trudged off, redheaded Princess of Heart by his side. "You'll get free periods next year....if you pass."
With a soft clunk the door behind Riku closed as his tall frame phased through the threshold and let the look of rivalry Sora was no doubt trying to throw at him meet nothing but a blank piece of metal instead. Within the brief moment of privacy allotted to him in the stairwell immediately afterward the silver-haired student allowed himself a quiet chuckle at getting the last word in. In public and especially with Kairi and Tidus having been right there he and Sora still rarely stopped competing for the chance to show the other up at even the smallest things.
As the uniform-clad student opened the door to the roof of the small school and found himself among other kids taking their free time here Riku had to admit he didn't get much out of the coveted free period, contrasting his previous taunt. Most of his friends were a year younger than himself so he barely had any classes with them and Wakka always spent his free time in school with his sports club. Sure the attractive and talented young man was acquainted with and even friends with many in his own grade by now, even upon returning to Destiny Islands after the current school year had started and completely missing the last, but none of them were his true friends. Once again Sora was lucky to be able to spend the unpleasant learning hours alongside them while Riku was forced to endure and be secretly envious.
Sora was also lucky that Riku and the others had been there to help him get out of doing the year of school he'd missed while traveling and ending up a grade behind, but that's another story and not one that his older rival envied him for.
Standing at the edge of the roof as always and staring up at the sky silently, Riku loosened and undid his tie with his left hand and ate his bread with the other. An absent mind controlled these automatic actions while the consciousnesses it harboured thought about what it always did during these hours. He was back home with the people he cared about and even going to school, but the future had already begun calling to him. Riku knew himself well enough to know that he couldn't stay on this world forever. There was still so much out there he hadn't seen and most of what he had had been under unpleasant circumstances. The now-expert swordsman even held the key to unlock paths to all that remained hidden out there in his very hands, something few others could claim. What Riku knew better now than he had before, however, was that he couldn't simply abandon his home either. This world; he always wanted to have it to come back to... and everyone here to come back to as well. So he'd finish school at least... maybe even wait for Sora and Kairi to catch up to him if he was feeling generous towards his best friends and competitors, but then he'd set out to live his childhood dream. This time though, he'd do it the right way. The idea brought a serene look to his handsome features as he stared blissfully into the clouds, in a world of his own.
But that was quickly ended when he noticed the sound of a conversation getting closer to him. Riku turned away from the edge of the roof and leaned his back on the rail, now tilting his head down with his eyes closed to appear more aloof, occasionally taking a drink from the can in his hand. He didn't need to let anyone else on the roof notice that he had thoughts of leaving home again just yet after only recently returning from a long absence. Even if those around him now were mostly unaware of the truth his popularity among the island kids had made his year-long "vacation" and subsequent return something few didn't know about.
That concept of not letting anyone know his thoughts of leaving in the future especially applied to himself. Hopefully his strong sword arm and the powerful force resting in his heart would have no reason to be put to use for some time yet. Neither had quite yet grown restless from the peace the Keyblade master was having over the past several months and until they did he wanted to leave his long year of battles and struggles aside. Once they began to stir for the rush of excitement Riku's urge to explore would begin growing again and quickly. The teenager wanted to make sure he had plenty more fond memories of home to always call him back no matter how far the adventurer's heart led him away.
Even without the darkness, Riku planned to go far indeed.
The darkness... the very force his heart continuously fought to restrain within him for so long. Sometimes, even after so many months, the heavy burden being gone almost seemed like an illusion, ready to slip away into harsh reality at any moment. Since the accident the darkness of Xehanort's Heartless had been completely separated from him, no longer merely subdued and waiting for its chance to completely corrupt him. The young man's own darkness remained, a darkness that he had to keep in check, but compared to that foreign, malevolent force it was a much easier task. Here at home, surrounded by his friends, the very thing that once caused it to grow in his heart now strengthened his light instead. The youthful dreams that attracted it to him in the first place had been made clearer in nature by experience and consequences. Like any boy who had a terrible weight taken off of his shoulders, Riku's attitude towards himself had improved greatly since his homecoming. No longer did he need to hide what he'd become from his closest companions and no longer did he have to spend time worrying about losing himself to Xehanort's Heartless again. These two things that were part of what defined him for more than an entire year were now long gone and he was far happier for it, if not as obviously cheery as Sora and Kairi tended to get sometimes. Riku's brand of happiness was a bit more self-restrained compared to those two.
As the majority of the other students began to depart from the roof in favour of other places to spend their free time Riku's hand tightened around the empty drink container in his grasp, crushing it just a little before tossing it with perfect aim into the nearby trash bin. He let both his hands wander their way into his pockets before looking back up at the sky off to his right, expression calm but thoughtful. Just as the teenager suspected that more adventure would probably be in his future even if he didn't desire it right now, so too would more risk of the darkness growing within him. His heart had conquered both darkness and light but overconfidence invited ruin. He'd seen it first-hand too many times by now to not know this fact. That was the real reason why the silver-haired Keyblade master knew that, whenever the yet-absent urge to explore outside his home did start to show itself again, he wouldn't leave before his friends could come with him. After all... he couldn't have Sora scolding him for trying to do everything by himself for a second time.
Still, even if they came with him, there were some things a guy just preferred to do by himself now and then right? This blue-eyed hero certainly did, especially when it came to remembering the lessons of the past. If he focused too much on the happiness of the present he could be doomed to repeat history again.
It was for that very reason that Riku had gone to the secret spot by himself some time after Sora and he returned to Destiny Islands. Celebrations on their true reunion had been long, so it had already been quite late when he had arrived on the small island that was their childhood playground. Even now Riku recalled looking up at the night sky as the pale moon shone down on his skin, stirring up memories of the night his home was invaded by the darkness. That darkness came because it had been invited... by him. The traveler's features had been hard with determination once he was inside the tiny cave filled with the scratched drawings of his youth. It wasn't the nearby picture of Sora and Kairi offering each other a Paopu fruit that drew his attention though. No, his solid cerulean gaze was fixed on the mysterious wooden door, which led to the heart of the world.
His heart called out to it and the Keyhole appeared, just as it had so many years ago to him. With a flash of light the Way to the Dawn was in his right hand, gripped tightly. Now was the day he could finally make sure his mistake never repeated itself. Angling his right shoulder forward the Keyblade rose with its master's right arm and pointed towards the Keyhole. A beam of white light from the Keyblade's tip filled the gap in the door and it vanished as a loud locking noise was created, echoing through the tiny area and filling his ears. To Riku it was the sound of completion and it rang proudly in his heart and mind, registering a goal accomplished. Sora had already restored the world he'd caused to disappear but at least the silver-haired warrior was now able to ensure its safety from this point on. No outside darkness would ever be allowed to touch its heart again, just like his own. With the Keyhole sealed the teen had looked down at the weapon in his hand with a smile; a smile of relief. Then, with one motion, the Way to the Dawn was implanted blade-first into the ground of the secret area and let go, standing there on its own straight up from the earth.
"So long," he'd said to it with a tone revealing his inner peace, allowing the Keyblade to represent all the trials and hardships he'd faced thus far, as well as the consequences of all his actions. He turned his back to it and the weapon slowly began vanishing into sparkles of light until it was fully gone from the world. Glancing just slightly behind from his right blue eye he would add before leaving, to make sure he knew he wasn't going to forget them either: "For now."
Fully back in the present, Riku knew that some day the Way to the Dawn would likely be called back into his hand once again. When it was, however, he'd let it symbolize something much different than what it did when he last left it behind; lessons learned from the night and hope for the future of the day... the true way to the dawn. As these memories came and then faded from his head Riku knew he'd acted very much like a loner again that night having not told anyone else his intentions. Sora probably wouldn't have even thought about sealing world Keyholes since the end of his first adventure and there rightly probably wasn't too much to threaten them anyway, but it was just something the older rival had to do even if he would never tell anyone. Chances were he'd always have some matters like that in his life, things he just didn't see the need to involve others in whether big or small. He just intended for them now to be more heavily populated by the smaller things so his heart and the hearts of his friends could grow closer by sharing the big ones together.
'Sorry Sora, but I'll never be as big a softie as you,' he commented in his mind with a smirk, realizing that the more a person changes the more they stay the same.
