Audition post (400 words):
“Tell me, sir; are you afraid of the dark?” A tall boy with azure eyes and argent hair asked, his handsome features gone to waste by a lack of expression. He laid back casually upon the velvet sofa, which was more rigid than expected. Despite being slightly uncomfortable, the boy showed no signs of discomfort; simply, a cold stare at the blank white ceiling as if he were in a trance. Defeating the purpose of asking the question in the first place, he did not wait for a reply and continued, “Then let me tell you a story,” He said with determination, belying his aloof attitude, “A story of a prideful boy who had betrayed everything for a dream…”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
There was once a fearless boy who had no equal; others admired him and yet he felt alone often. There were only two with whom he could give even a fragment of his hidden heart. To them he imparted a share of his dreams, his aspirations. Isolated upon that lonely island, he was frustrated; blinded by a youthful arrogance as he was, he sought something more than what he had. There were Worlds out there, if only he could reach out to them beyond that ever-distant horizon…
He got his chance.
The shadow came and it brought with it disaster. And yet, unlike the others, he did not cower from this Darkness, this destruction and death; rather, he welcomed it. The boy opened his arms out wide and he embraced the black abyss. Drunk on promises, the boy only barely noticed his friend’s cry. However, in response, he merely extended out a hand of invitation. Join me, was what the boy had thought.
What followed was a series of events that spiraled out of his control. To find the boy, his friend searched across Worlds. When they finally met, they fought and in the end, he lost to his friend. It was not his friend who should’ve reached for the boy’s hand back then, it was the boy who should’ve grabbed for his friend’s…
He had time to regret; heavens, he had time. Yet, only with the help of a Witch, did he realize the time he wasted in remorse could’ve better been spent on penance; on self-improvement. So the boy chose the middle road and decided to give everything to his friend; his only chance at redemption. Donning Darkness again and blinding himself from the Light, he protected his friends from the shadows. It took a brave girl to rekindle the connection between them. When he could see the Light again, the boy almost cried.
When everything had concluded, the boy returned to the home he once detested; the prison of an island that so ironically now seemed like a paradise. The boy never forgot the Darkness, yet he chose to walk in the Light. It was a hard path, the hardest even, but he would see it through…

“That was a wonderful story, Riku, but how does it relate to your future career choices?” The middle-aged man, with a heavy brow and a rather lanky figure asked as he fell back against his arm chair, a little unsatisfied with the waste of time he had had to listen to.
“It has everything to do with that, Counselor,” Riku replied with an unnerving zeal considering his composed disposition. The silver-haired youth had always been of few words, choosing to speak only that which was necessary. He was the sensible type; certainly it threw the poor counselor into disarray having Riku talk about nonsense like Light and Darkness. That Sora boy must still be a bad influence. Clearing his throat, the counselor spoke with an obvious unease, “Well, in any case, with your grades, I believe you could easi-”
“I want to be a Teacher,” Riku interrupted abruptly,
“What? You could do so much better if-”
“Thank you, but we both know who’s the more stubborn one here,” Without so much as a sidelong glance, Riku picked himself up from the sofa and proceeded towards the exit, “I know this is hypocritical of me, but if you see Sora, please convince him that ‘Pirate’ isn’t a feasible occupation,” A click of the door and Riku had left; someone awaited him on the other side.
“Someone like you is full of contradictions, huh?” A familiar voice, his own in fact, jeered. A boy with his appearance, but a few years younger stood before him with arms crossed wearing an all too nostalgic dark outfit. In contrast to Riku’s melancholy expression, the younger him bore a gloating smirk and merciless eyes,
“Yes but even so, I’ll keep on going as I am,” Riku answered without batting an eyelid as he walked past his other ‘self’. His path was haunted, but it was the one he had chosen; he would not look back. Riku had made many mistakes, but he knew for certain that this was not one of them. He had come a long way.
“A teacher? With your past, you have no right to lecture others,” The younger him scoffed, calling out at Riku’s back with a heavy tone of mockery. Riku knew that, in a way, the boy was right. But, again, even so…
“I will not betray my heart any more,” Riku stopped walking, but he did not turn back. Not this time. “I only hope others may learn from my mistakes,”
A chuckle followed a malign snort that conveyed the younger Riku’s disgust. He could hardly believe he himself had become someone so soft; this empathy was Sora’s department.
“You will not be forgiven this way,” It was a simple truth that escaped his younger self’s lips, curbed in that arrogant smirk he once always had,
“I never expected to be forgiven in the first place,” Riku responded with an untouchable sadness and a quiet pride. He was not that cocky young adventurer he once was and he could never repent enough, but he could still live a life he would be proud of.

A moment of solace saw to it Riku read by himself quietly in the back of a library on one of the desks nobody ever visited, near the section of books nobody ever cared about; the out-of-date archives. These books that no longer held relevance to modern society and had long gone out of print; it was the perfect place for recluse. Perhaps it had become a habit over the course of his travels, but he had gotten accustomed to being alone; unlike Sora, Riku did not always have someone with him. The King had been Riku’s guide, but he came and went like the wind. Riku lacked the stable pillar of support he so craved. Despite this, it was fine. Riku had learnt that being by yourself, did not necessarily mean you were alone. There were at least three other people who he would keep locked tightly in his heart; they would ensure he would never go astray again.
“This place suits your fallen heart,” It was him again, the younger self Riku accepted and yet chose not to follow, “You will age; your name will be forgotten,”
“As with all men,” Riku said, not taking his eyes off the book he was engrossed in,
“But you are not like the rest! You are destined for greater things!” Riku’s younger self called out passionately, converse to the cold malevolence from before.
“I don’t believe in destiny; so I will walk my own road,” Was Riku’s immediate reply. Neither Light nor Darkness, he was a man who trekked the Dawn; the path that could not be imposed, only chosen. The dark side of him sneered in distaste, “Do you really believe you deserve to be happy?”
“No, I do not deserve to. But, I will be, or else those who care for me will be hurt once more,” Riku raised his head from the pages of his book and spared his young self a soft smile. With an acknowledging nod, Riku said, “I win again today,”
“It’s only a matter of time,” His darker self folded his arms and glared at Riku with tenacious eyes,
“Better luck next time, then,” Riku closed his book and picked himself up. At the same time, a girl with maroon hair a year his junior appeared before his hidden library corner,
“Who were you talking to, Riku?” She asked curiously,
“You know, just talking to myself, Kairi,” Riku said listlessly and approached the girl, standing himself beside her, “Where’s Sora?”
“He’s waiting outside the movies, we better hurry!” Kairi grabbed Riku’s arm and tugged him with her as if she were afraid he’d go off and disappear to some quiet place again. A little embarrassed she was touching him; Riku gave a casual wave to his darker self still grimly fuming. Riku could only move forward from here.
