As smoke crept through the window, there came a screeching noise from within the shabby pawn shop. A woman with red lipstick, blush and heavy eye-shadow and mascara sat slouched on a dull, worn-out leather armchair. Her face was red and she heaved and panted, but she soon returned to normal, her face returning to its pale color. Medusa was angry, because she didn’t get what she wanted. And when Medusa was angry, people got hurt.
All she wanted was that damned diamond! How, how on Earth could she have been beaten by a couple of thieving mice? The Madame was extremely angry. She had been defeated and left in the dirt without anything. Medusa deserved everything! In fact, she deserved more than the diamond. She deserved all the wealth and fame of the world! Medusa lifted a limp, skinny arm and held up her small, cracked mirror, staring into it and fixing her dry, orange hair. So pretty…I should have torn that girl’s rotten bear apart. Nah, I should’ve torn herapart! pondered Medusa, as she batted her eyelids in the mirror, soaking in her own vanity.
She managed to exploit the brat’s weakness, which was that stupid bear—but still, a pair of mice whisked her away! Medusa blamed everyone, everyone but herself, for the loss of the diamond…nothing was her fault. The crocodiles and her ruddy follower, and especially those mice and that infuriating brat, were all to blame!
Now what was she to do? Rob a bank? Steal another orphan and locate another precious diamond? As Medusa contemplated, she felt a surge of rage overwhelm her; she always returned to this shabby pawn shop in the end! It wasn’t fair! With extreme force, and once again with a red face of anger, Medusa stood up and tossed the mirror out of the filthy window. There was a satisfying crash as the glass shattered and the pedestrians below cried out in alarm.
Madame Medusa would find a way to get all the money she deserved. Oh yes she would. And with money comes power and respect, thought Medusa, rubbing her bony hands together in delight, her angry expression becoming naughty with a sinister sheen. Somehow, she would find a way to get what she wanted, what she deserved. Turning around, she moved her stick-like body shabbily toward the grimy door, threw it open, a devilish grimacing expression plastered to her bony face, and stepped out, ready to do some major mind-controlling.
She went downstairs to the shop, and upon arriving downstairs, she noticed a visitor. It was a girl, roughly in her early years of adulthood, it seemed, and she beamed sickly at Medusa as she stood there in her pretty, expensive clothes. Ooh. This one may be worth it, Medusa thought, and she immediately put on a fake, sweet smile, her eyes shining greedily as she grinned at the girl and stepped over to the till. “May I help you, deary?” she asked, puffing her hair a little, with one skinny hand.
“Uh, yeah…I…um…” the girl muttered, her face contorting oddly. Still, Medusa had her switch of false sweetness on. But when she noticed the giggling children outside the window, her face twisted and her eyes grew wide with fury.
“OUT! OUT, YOU LITTLE BRATS!” she hollered, and the girl’s face lit up with amusement at Medusa. At Madame Medusa! At the one and only! [/i]How dare she, that stupid little idiot![/i] thought the vain woman with certainty. Medusa would show her whose boss! Grabbing a broom that was lying randomly on the floor, she chased after the girl, batting her ruthlessly with it as the girl attempted to flee from the shop. The girl’s friends opened the door, but the Madame closed it shut with great force, locking it quickly, and pulling the girl from her hair. She squealed in fear, much to Medusa’s satisfaction.
And, much to the girl’s horror, Madame Medusa dragged her upstairs by her hair, prepared to beat her and rob her of her valuables…
