If you've been on the forum long enough, you may have seen Quest Masters (QMs) creating sign up threads for Quests. You may also have read the Quest Rules. However, that doesn't help you if you don't think that you will survive a Quest. Well, the fact is, it's a lot simpler than you think.
The first thing to remember about Quests is that the QM is not your enemy. They runs the enemies, they decides when you get hurt, they decides when you hit... but they are not out to get you. Chances are, if the Quest is really hard, there's an AWESOME prize waiting at the end for you!
'But Prythy,' you say, 'that doesn't help me survive the Quests!' And this is true, it doesn't. Paying attention to EXACTLY what the QM posts will, however. Oftentimes the best way through is hinted in the post itself, somehow. Let's take a look at an example.
The enemy staggered back as the attacks found their mark, the ice attacks by Jane particularly effective. It roared, and the blue-white gem on its forehead changed colors to red. The monster growled, charging once more.
Nothing there, you say? Nonsense, of course there is! It's hidden, however, so the Quest isn't too easy. The gem on the creature's forehead changed color during the post. Its previous color was 'blue white', or a color that is most often used for ice elements. It changed to red, meaning that it was currently weak to fire. This was just an example, of course; QMs all have different styles and will imply things in different ways. However, the way through is most often in the post itself.
Other common obstacles in a Quest are puzzles, riddles, and other mysteries. These the characters have to solve before you can move on. 'But Prythy, my character isn't that smart, and I can't figure out the puzzle myself!' Well, Quests aren't one-on-one things unless specifically designed that way; most of the time you have multiple characters in a Quest. If you're stumped, let the other players have a shot at it.
Sometimes, very rarely, Quests are run without the players knowing the objective. In that case, experiment! Find out what you can and can't do, and again, read the QM's posts carefully for hints. Part of the fun will be finding out what you're supposed to do next!
Quests can come in all styles, and if you want to do a Quest but don't see one you want, you can always request one from the QM. They may be happy to run a request for you.
Lastly, we get to different things you may see in the Quest. You can see enemies, you can see riddles and puzzles... we've gone over these. However, some Quests have specific addons that you may see.
For example, Reaction Commands. These may be customized for a specific character, a group of characters, generic commands any character can do... The Reaction Commands tell you a special move you're allowed to do that you wouldn't normally do OR guide you through the Quest in a specific manner, allowing a 'storyline tree'. Or you can choose not to do the commands at all and freestyle.
Example: The end of the QM's post had reaction commands Jumpstrike (Jump over enemy and hit them in the back), Lance Tactics (Hold weapon in front of you at the charging enemy), and Spindodge (Spin out of the charging enemy's path) Only one could be chosen by each person.
Jane may post like this:
Jane ran forwards at the charging enemy, jumping up in the air at the last second and bringing down her sword as she did a front flip, attacking directly at the monster's unprotected back. Whether she was successful or not, she landed behind it on her feet and whirled around.
Joe, on the other hand, may post like this:
Joe held forwards his spear, the head pointed directly at the charging monster. It glistened in the light as he braced the end of it against a crack in the ground, stiffening his arms and legs as he prepared for the shock of the enemy.
And John may post like this:
John was directly in the path of the monster, but he quickly spun on his feet, whirling himself around and using the momentum to get out of the way off to the right of the monster. He then shot a fireball at it, hoping to catch it off guard with his maneuvers.
The QM would then post the results of all their commands, saying if the attacks were successful.
Other addons and conditions may be a time limit on posting, a specific way that the QM's posts are written, and other things. Questing isn't hard to survive if you pay attention and do what seems right to you in the Quest, and you can win many things from them. QMs are flexible, and typically want you to succeed in their Quest.
Happy Questing!
