Setting the stage..
There is no government, it's just been completely decimated by an extremely hostile alien race, and only remnants of the former Empire remain. This takes place about 500 years after the fall, and humanity still manages to linger, mainly because the aliens are happy to stick to the planets and leave the humans to their devices in free space.
Cloning has become reality, and is one of the major factors keeping humanity afloat, in fact, the Vhrol, the hostile aliens, have actually managed to infect the majority of the remaining populace with a contagious, air-born disease that virtually 'sterilized' humanity. Only a few humans have been proven to be resistant, but their immunity can't be replicated. Thus, cloning is the only way to reproduce, practically that is.
Clones are not exact copies, they're made from a pair of sample DNA strands, between a pair of parents. But still, clones have virtually no immune system, short life-spans of only about thirty-two years. However, they are immune to genetic viruses due to the nature of the process, building on DNA one strand, amino acid, and gene at a time.
"Pure Clones", clones made from only one donor, are extremely rare. Only Pilots use these, and as their memories are fed to the clones by a linked mental implant, they use them to make sure they don't 'bite the dust'.
Daily life consists of scavenging ancient wrecks, mining precious minerals from asteroids, etc. Every now and then an upstart group tries to re-claim Earth, but always fails. Rather than have their moral constantly lowered by these set-backs, most of humanity prefers to regretfully stick to their ecostations, great spherical stations with incredibly thick domes that imitate planets. These are equipped with heavy shields and bristle with defense systems should an enemy try to assail them. The stations even go so far as to have the dome, which is more of a glass slab fit between metal on the sphere, rotate to create a false sense of night and day.
However, as a few human outposts are discovering, the Vrohl's greedy minds are starting to lack in tolerance for the humans. But, with their only contact with each other being through Pilots, the outposts await their doom without knowing what is coming..
Weclome to Rogue Star.
