His plan had failed, simply due to the actions of the traitor, Axel. Now he was at death's door, and he knew it. The fight had taken most of his energy, it was a miracle that he had managed to escape.
'I should have seen this coming.' It had been obvious that his plan had been severly jeopardized when he'd had to modify it so that he'd finish it on his own. He wasn't against fighting per say, but he would have preferred the plan be finished before it reached this point.
Another thought along the same line rang through Zexion's mind as Axel and the Replica appeared. 'I should have known something like this would occur. The state of the Organization here should have put me on my guard.' As these thoughts appeared, he heard Axel put the idea of his death for power into the Replica's head.
As he saw death approaching, for some reason, his thoughts flashed to his now fallen allies, Lexaeus and Vexen. He thought of blaming Vexen for the situation he was in, he had created the Replica after all, but quickly decided against it. There had simply been too many factors for the academic to handle, Marluxia being the largest of them. He had tried to complete his mission, failed, panicked and tried to run, and been killed in the attempt. Sad, but he'd done some good.
Lexaeus on the other hand, had done his duty to the end. The mostly silent man had tried, ineffectively, to convince Riku to join them. Though he too had died, he'd been loyal to the end, shocking Zexion with his last words. If he could have, Zexion would have mourned his passing.
Now though, his thoughts turned back to the one who'd played both sides against the middle, Axel. The number VIII of the organization was an enigma, seeming to have no loyalty to either side in the castle. Instead, he seemed to simply be there, preferring to change sides without notice. In retrospect, Zexion thought, he was the least trustworthy of anyone here.
"Axel," he said, his voice steady despite the position he was in, "I never expected you to be a traitor. It was the only thing I didn't take into account."
The red head simply smirked at him as the replica pondered his suggestion, "Well, that's just the way it is. It's really too bad, I was having fun with our little bets." By this point, the Replica had made up his mind, and began walking purposefully towards Zexion.
"Just answer me this Axel: Why turn on me? Marluxia is the traitor, I at least follow the Organization."
In a futile attempt at his own defense, Zexion summoned his Tome of Judgement. He tried to fight back against the Replica's approaching form."N-no!" he yelled, the panic now obvious in his voice, "I won't just die here!" He swung desperately try to save himself, only to have his weapon knocked out of his weakened hands.
"Sorry Zexion," he heard Axel say as the Replica grabbed him by the throat, "You just knew too much."
As the Replica began to access his dark powers, some last echoed through Zexion's head, 'So, this is how it ends for me. How odd though, it feels as though I'm almost... afraid? How...unusual. I wonder... maybe the plan will work even without me... I did want to see it succeed though...'
Then, everything went black.
