Audition post (400 words):
Riku was at yet another crossroad in his life; one arguably more dire than his decision twixt light and darkness. The silver haired boy, no that was incorrect, he was clearly a young man now; the silver haired young man was to reunite with his old friends after many long years. After he defected to the darkness, after he abandoned them for all that time; he was meant to see them again? How could he? He had too much pride. There were many things he was not proud of, and for a person with as much pride as Riku, it would be unbearable to face them again knowing that. He had hurt others, he had submitted to evil, he had been weak. Call it a fool’s pride, but Riku was not ready for his old friends to see him before he had made up for all the trouble he caused.
Yet, Sora and Kairi were as pushy as ever. Sora was always demanding, he probably didn’t realize it himself because he approaches everything with the best of intentions. And Kairi? Well, she’s normally a quiet, reserved girl but her stubbornness surpassed even Riku’s own. Against these two, even Riku stood no chance. He caved. So it was Riku found himself making his way, though admittedly at a slower pace than he could be, to the place they had agreed to meet; the school they all attended and Sora and Riku had just enrolled in.
Wakka, Tidus, Selphie and the others. Riku couldn’t help wondering how they had changed. Honestly? He would’ve wanted them to stay exactly as they were back then. Ironic coming from him who had most likely undergone the most changes, wasn’t it? Though it was unreasonable, it was the wish of a foolish boy who had callously thrown away his childhood.
“They’ve forgotten you,”
On cue, that voice penetrated the very depths of his thoughts. He knew it well.
“You turned your back on them. It’s to be expected, right?”
His other self waited at the turn of the corner; a reflection of his uncouth past. His younger self drabbed in darkness, a dark purple armour and white cloth around his waist. Arms cross, the embodiment of his darkness smirked, “Face it. You have no home to return to,” Though Xehanort’s Heartless was gone, Riku’s personal darkness was still very much alive. He was not forced the darkness, it was always within him and it had grown strong over the course of his mistakes; having been cultivated by both Maleficient and the Seeker of Darkness.
“You’re pretty talkative today,” Riku replied, answering arrogance with cockiness, and didn’t even miss a step as he continued on his way. Disappearing and reappearing, the young Riku again stood in the current Riku’s way.
”It’s only because you refuse to listen,”
“I don’t need to hear your lies,” Riku sneered, his hand itched towards summoning his keyblade and striking this phantom down.
“Don’t delude yourself! If I am a lie, I am your lie! A convenient after image to cast blame for all your darkness!
“…” Riku stopped his walking and stood a deathly still, his head bowed and the silver fringes covered his expression from sight. Was this it? No, Riku had always been too proud to bow his head to anyone. The silver-haired rogue tilted his head back up with the an obnoxious grin, “We’re both lies, trying to hide away our weakness in the comfortable dark. But, that is why this is important for me; I want to step away from the darkness blinding me and face the truth,”
“You…!” His shadow took a step back as its face contorted into a scowl.
“I won’t let you spoil my new beginning, my ‘dawn’. Get out of my sight,” Riku looked directly at his own darkness, not as if it was an enemy to be feared and hated, but as a defiant servant who did not know his place.
“The Darkness that precedes Light…” The younger Riku growled and from the feet up, he began to fade, “How long can your resolve last? You who willingly submerged yourself in darkness do not deserve the light,”
“I agree with you. But I know three idiots who’ll argue that until their throats are hoarse,” He smiled, Riku never did smile often these days; he grinned proudly, he smirked arrogantly but genuinely smile? It only came along when he had the time to think of the three most important people in his life.
“Riku! So that’s where you are! You’re late, hurry up! Everyone’s waiting!” The very familiar form of a girl yelled from the distance, her small arms waving at him with all the might she could muster. What kind of man would he be if he kept Kairi waiting? Riku breathed in deeply and took a step forward to a better tomorrow.
