The notion of immortality scares me. I will live forever. The things I've seen already... they haunt me, day and night. Lately, life has become more bearable. I have friends now. There is peace in my life and in the world. I can finally let go of my past and look towards my very long future.
But I know one day, this will all cease to be. My friends will not live forever. Things change. This is what scares me most.
The framed pictures on the wall smile down on him. He smirked a little, recalling the fond memories behind the photos he recognized. Vincent Valentine sipped lightly from his wineglass, listening to the chatter around him. Such trivial conversation. It was as if the past never happened. He knew this was only an act. Certainly the nightmares from the past of this city kept these people up at night. Did the children cry out in their sleep? Did the adults still check the skies?
Vincent sometimes wondered what it would be like to act as if he were "normal". Cut his hair, wear sensible clothes, get a job. Something he never let on to was that he daydreamed more than a teenage girl. Not that he could ever pull it off, or would even try. He could never be a normal man, a son, a husband. Not anymore. Because he would live forever... and his loved ones would not.
He realized this is why he clung to Lucrecia. She would live forever as well, forever young and forever living. She was the Sleeping Beauty in a crystal casket.
Vincent's fingers gripped dangerously around the fragile glass stem of the wine glass.
So many things he wished he could do. Chip away at the crystal surrounding Lucrecia, and break her free. It was so selfish. To be able to take her into his arms like he'd never gotten the chance to, just to feel the warmth of another human body... bliss. Happiness. Peace.
He took another sip. How much sweeter it had tasted when she had been there with her picnic basket, the warm breeze on their skin. He had never been able to find wine so sweet since then. He searched and searched, trying to relive that moment's taste.
Still couldn't find it.
